Outlander Season 5 Last Block of Filming

Screen Shot 2019-09-29 at 1.42.25 PM

Updates this week as the cast and crew are getting into the last stretch of filming for season 5. Matthew B. Roberts (@TheMattBRoberts), writer and producer on the show had shown a picture of his heavily marked up book for Season 6, A Breath of Snow and Ashes and a Guy Fawkes mask. What is the message we get here? Rumors have it parts of ABOSAA is being used in  Season 5. Guess you will just have to read it after you hurriedly  finish up The Fiery Cross.

The S5 filming blocks are ending, which means the set up for the conclusion of the season is underway. Sam Heughan and Colin McFarlane (Ulysses) gave us a great BTS shot this week. Large amounts of extras and crew can be seen in the background. No shots of Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jocasta), although her Twitter said she was hopping around in the PNW (Seattle) in the US this week.

Also seen on set again and acting, or behaving badly were the kittens playing Adso. Apparently a huge distraction with everyone on the set. Adso is a character we follow with great fondness, who becomes a fixture of the big house and Claire’s surgery room. But no more spoilers here. It looks like we are close to a wrap on this season’s filming. That means production will be at least 3 more months. As Matthew B. Roberts has said, he is already on the scripts and John Gary Steele is designing sets for S6. We’ll see who joins the writers room this coming season. The War of Regulation is fast approaching. And after that, the American revolution.

Yes, those are Caitriona Balfe’s hands. Hope they got a lint roller.

Outlander Locales: Stirling

Castle Stirling

Stirling has been a hotbed for filming these past few years. Filled with history, Robert the Bruce Country, and amazing forests and hillwalking opportunities and many woods and exterior opportunities make it a great place to film. Although crews work tirelessly at all hours and under weather conditions from snow and ice to heat and full on midge attacks, the beauty and hospitality of the area make it a fantastic shoot. Not to mention the fabulous Stirling Castle, with some of the best living history examples I have seen at an estate. Stirling and the surrounding area boast several locations for Outlander filming, including recent filming fo

r Season 5. Oh, and then there are a few films, like the recent Netfix film, Outlaw King, that have filmed in the surrounding areas.

Fall is one of the most spectacular times in Scotland. The tourist numbers go down a bit, and with recent climate changes there have been Indian Summer days a plenty. However it’s still a country of four seasons in a day, so pack accordingly. Stirling is a great place for hillwalking, and locations like Mine Woods, where some of Season 5 has been filmed, is just one such area to have a peaceful ramble.

And if you are a fan of great series and film, why not check out the surrounding areas for your favorites. And many other Outlander and other filming locations are within an hour of the city. The city is reachable by train and there are some public buses and touring companies that can get you to these sites.

Steven Cree Joins A Discovery of Witches Series

Screen Shot 2019-09-15 at 1.12.36 PM

If you are a cross genre fan and filling up time in Droughtlander with other fun historical time travel series, look no further than A Discovery of Witches, a Sky TV production that is based on the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. I’m finally getting to finish this series of books up, and having fun imagining what a more colorful world it would be if I had daemon and vampire friends. Like mystery involving daemons, vampire clans, and witches, oh and time travel? Then you’ve found the right series to help tide you over. And you get to see a very bearded Steven Cree. Maybe he could take some lessons from Duncan Lacroix, as his advice seeking from Sam Heughan is going no where.

It was announced this past week by Steven Cree’s (Ian Murray) Agency Troika, that Steven would be filling the very big shoes of Gallowglass, a Scottish vampire in the series. It is also why some filming had to be moved around that involved the beloved Lallybroch location earlier this month.

Now, if you have read the books, Gallowglass is definitely some serious shoon to fill. Cree Screen Shot 2019-09-15 at 1.20.03 PMis often seen in roles where he has an aloof brooding, not saying much, but when he does it is filled with depth and understanding. Oh, wait, that would be perfect for his new role.

While many of the All Souls Trilogy fans have also entered debate into familiar book v. series conversations on social media, this production is fairly faithful to the books. That said, the coming season will be a treat as Stephen will be in the 16th century in Elizabethan London on this time excursion. And he has already lived quite a long life.

Sadly season 2 of A Discovery of Witches is still in production and will show on Sky Network later in 2020. It takes at least a month or more before it shows on networks AMC owns in the States. You are looking at at least summer of 2020 before you can catch the show if you are in North America.

Also joining the cast as Philippe De Clermont, Mathews Vampire Father and head of the De Clermont family is James Purefoy.

The story follows the witch Diana, played by Teresa Palmer, who discovered the Book of Life when doing research. The vampire Matthew De Clermont (Matthew Goode, Downton Abbey) tracks her down as they are both drawn to the mysterious book, the fact that many deamons and witches are searching for it, and only Diana can seem to call it up from the mysterious Bodleian library at Oxford University. Series two encompasses the second book in the series, Shadow of Night.

Check out Steven’s Twitter account, as he is already having some fun pokes at the massive beard he must grow and how the beard is overshadowing his life on the new set.

Duncan Lacroix Cancels Sasnak City Appearance

Screen Shot 2019-09-01 at 12.24.58 PM

Duncan Lacroix has had to cancel out of his appearance at the SasnakCity Con on late October due to filming commitments. He apologized on his Instagram account today. We were wondering how he was going to be at both the New York City Comic Con earlier in the month and the Kansas City con later in the month.

Lacroix is due to begin work on This Guest of Summer with Graham McTavish and Stephan Walters in October, which has moved production to the UK as costs and crew issues were making New Zealand unfavorable. We are also hoping that he is finishing up Outlander somehow in that timeframe as the Regulators have a big role in the end of the season, not that filming actually always happens in sequence for any series. In some cases interiors and exteriors are shot on same dates, different actors and locals during the same block or during another.

There has been much lamenting on social media today. The good thing is, you will have two productions to see him in in 2020, unless he’s snuck in a third. Even better.

Keep an eye out for production tidbits here and you can still help contribute to the film
