What’s Steven Cree Got Up His Sleeve! ADOW and COBRA

IMG_5132

We all know this Friday’s Star Force 3 Instagram film trailer has you hooting it up, that’s Hootenanny affirmative. It’s the best in socially distanced filming fun, and it’s in space! Starring Cree, Caitriona Balfe, James McAvoy, ADOW star Teresa Palmer, James Kirk, Chris Forbes and a few special guests.

So, what has Steven been up to? He did not make an appearance in Season 5 of Outlander, and may not make an appearance again until Season 7, if they are following the books, which as we know the writers are swapping about scenes between books.  We miss Ian Murray! But never fear, along with his spaced out larks, Steven’s got some new characters coming your way.

Steven Faces Disaster

Steven showed up stateside on Amazon Prime/PBS App this week in COBRA, a rather chilling and close to the bone tale of the disaster and secret ops UK division that the Prime Minister, played here rather well by Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, Once Upon A Time) calls into session over a disaster. The sun erupts with a solar flare that wipes out communications and power all over Europe. It’s not far off from what could really happen, science wise,  and shows how governments are ill prepared for such disasters. Oh, the drama!

Steven Cree stars as the very harried Chief Constable of Tyneside Police, Steven Collier. When a decision is made by the Prime Minister that jeopardizes the whole of the north of the country, Cree has to contend with vigilantes and hoards of people who have no power or communications.  Just think COVID isolation on steroids. Watch now on PBS App on Amazon.

Get Ready for Leather Period Fun!

But what Steven has really been having fun on, is working on A Discovery of Witches, based on the All Souls Trilogy books by Deborah Harkness. Season 3 production  just started rolling back in due to COVID shut downs. While we have yet to see season 2 stateside, January 8th it is available in the in the UK.

Yes, Steve is in another time traveling show! Steven Cree plays Gallowglass de Claremont, a Scottish vampire and Mathew’s nephew in the vampire family way, in 1590. For some back story on Gallowglass, go here but beware of spoilers. Watch the series or read the books first.  If you haven’t watched the series, do. If you haven’t read the books yet, do, preferably first. Anything to get your mind off world affairs for the next few weeks. I mean, you get to see men in leather jerkins, can’t get better than that. You can watch Season 2 in the UK on Sky One TV and NOW TV on January 8, 2021. The series will show on Sundance Now and Shudder TV in the US shortly after.

Discovery of Witches Release Date Season 2 Details

So, to keep you a little entertained until then, here’s some behind the scenes fun, some Steven Cree madness, and more.

Sasnak City Virtual Chat With Duncan Lacroix

Screen Shot 2020-10-05 at 6.46.33 PM

That Duncan Lacroix! On October 3, 2020 I joined a chat via Sasnak City’s magical portal, and preceded to ask the most difficult questions and embarrass myself silly. But really, we did have a wonderful conversation with our man that plays Murtagh, and we were gifted with a bit of insight to the mysterious Duncan Lacroix.

The following is a summary of the subjects that were covered.

Horses

Duncan was asked a question about how accomplished he was with riding before the Outlander series began. He explained that most actors put on their CV that they have ridden horses, but none of that is true. Unless you are really working on a productin with some heavy riding, you don’t get the experience. He had had some riding, or rather being placed on a horse sitting, brief scenes like in Vikings (Season 2). However he was very fortunate in being cast early for Outlander, he was part of the cast in bootcamp horse training. He got more training as they were doing the long riding treks like in the episode The Rent. He also watched some YouTube videos on communicating with horses and found that he wanted to take the time with the horse to get to know the animal, he would go and groom and handle the horse building up a relationship.

In contrast, when he was on the production The Outlaw King, the horse he was given was very green. Apparently at the time of production, Game of Thrones was in its last season and had hired all the horses trained to work in production. The horses they had hired for Outlaw King were from horse rescue and the one he was given had never been ridden. That was quite an experience. He then went on about how the horses all have their personality days. Oh yes, there was biting?

Message For Youth

Duncan was asked if he had any advice for youth. After thinking for a bit, advised they  get away from the social media. Being a group of teachers, we agreed!

Education

On the subject of his current educational endeavors, Duncan discussed his Philosophy studies and going back to university to pursue another degree. He expressed some frustration at university being mostly online, even before COVID issues, and missed the face to face classes we have all experienced. We all agreed and discussed how education had changed. Philosophy was discussed, how could it help acting, or just understanding phycology and people in general.

Travel Plans

Duncan was not able to travel for most of his life, stage acting in Ireland times were lean. He told us how fantastic it had been to have a month in New Zealand to himself, exploring. When COVID clears, he wants to travel to the Mongolian desert and travel using a 4×4 for about a month. It’s Murtagh Mobile Mach II.

Makeup and Costume

I asked a question about makeup and costume stories he  may have, and he was very gracious and supportive of the crew and how hard they work to make him and the other actors look good. They were there long hours. I asked about complexity and he talked about season 1 and the way they had Murtagh first looking, with the easiest of course being the muddied up and road dirt, to a slight prosthesis for pock marked cheeks and ruddiness. They dropped this in subsequent seasons, and of course the most recent change where he was aged to silver fox mode. He mentioned some of the gluing of beard parts, and the wig.

Production

I asked a question about the pictures that surfaced of him having a nap between filming shoots for season 1. Was it really a difficult shoot first season and tiring, do you rest in between? He mentioned that well, there were some long shoots for the blocks around the episodes The Rent, and also when they were filming the “Finding Jamie” episode, there was a lot of riding and being out of doors for long hours. Besides, if it was beautiful out, wouldn’t you rest in a field?

ACTING

Of course the most important was “Will we see you in anything soon?” Duncan explained that along with many other actors and productions being shut down due to COVID, there was nothing on at the moment. He had been in Los Angeles when the restrictions went in, meeting with a manager that he liked. The idea had been to get him trying for Broadway plays. He discussed how he really missed doing theatre, he had not been on stage since before Outlander started filming and really wanted to get back at it. It seems that even though doing another series would be great, his true passion is the stage and it would be a dream to get on Broadway. He’ll have to try again once productions get underway.

Thank you Duncan for putting up with the teachers and letting us catch a glimpse of your new directions in acting and life. It was a wonderful way to forget the world for a time and get some great insight to our favorite series and the man who played our favorite Godfather.

Outlander Season Six Updates: Release Date Late Fall 2021

Outlander Season 5 2020

It’s official, the longest Droughtlander yet! As official as COVID allows in film production, announced this week that Outlander Season Six is to start up production in January 2021. That is, if we do not have another world surge of virus. Crossing fingers, here we go.

What that means is that we are looking at a late fall 2021 airing date at the earliest. Well, it’s a conservative guess at this point. Why so long?

Outlander has a huge cast, the background actors alone take a lot of consideration. Casting for these usually occurs very close to production filming. The production is working with a new set designer, which means everyone will have to get used to how that build is going to go. While scripts have been near completion for months, casting for the upcoming guest cast this season has been put on hold or not announced due to the on hold status of production. And filming in winter means freezing cold Scotland, even on sound stages that are somewhat insulated with lighting and builds. However, the outside will be formidable. This means that even the filming blocks may be jumbled and not in order to take advantage of the weather.

So, what will you be doing to bide your time until this time, next fall?

Re-Read all of the books published so far in the Outlander Series, for the 5th time.

Read all of the Lord John Grey books.

Watch seasons 1-5 for the 1000th time.

Pull out all those official and unofficial Outlander sewing patterns and sew them up for cosplay. Then create background character costumes. Film your own Outlander side story.

Chase down production news. Warning: This last year they kept many of the filming sites under wraps for along time. Good luck. If you have friends that live in the UK, convince them to check locations for you once COVID restrictions are lifted a second time.

Go in debt attending Virtual Convention Series chatting with your favorite actors on the series. Well, you are helping to keep them busy and fed while everyone waits for production to start up.

Questions, Questions and Spoilers Here

As Outlander is straying further from the books at times, and events in each of the books are used as a framework at best. Here are some questions I have had.

51218

Marsali, Medical Apprentice

In the books, Marsali is not the medical assistant. Claire doesn’t take on an apprentice until the character of Malva Christie appears in the next two books. That being said, Caitriona Balfe has hinted at Claire’s great sickness coming this season. Not to add a spoiler, however if Marsali is the apprentice, then there would not be a Malva issue? We just won’t go there. Perhaps after Henri-Christian arrives, she will decide to stop anything that will make God angry with her.

Roger and Brianna Callings

Our well educated couple has ended up back on the Ridge. In the books, Roger starts hearing the call of religion, becoming a religious man. While this is often aligned in education, teaching in this time period, how will the show bring this in. In the books religion starts making a very big difference, as in the time period, the sciences may have started to come in, but New Englanders were a suspicious lot. While Jamie has tried to hide that he is a papist and the land grant called for the settlers to be protestant, conflicts arose on the Ridge. While not one of my favorite aspects of story line in the series, I am wondering how series Roger is going to handle this and what the writers have in store.

Brianna on the other hand, becomes the Ridge’s Leonardo Da Vinci in a way. Look out for some sciency things creeping in.

BigHouse

Don’t Get Attached to The Big House

Yes, the portents of doom in an article reporting the deaths of James and Claire Fraser by fire should be the hint. The house is amazing and beautiful and we love every detail. It’s Jon Gary Steel’s last season. They worked so hard on it. Outlander has fire bugs, and not just the flashing bugs in the books.

Lord John Grey is Back to England

With Ulysses as companion, David Berry has made statements that he has left the show. However, that could be a subterfuge or really, he hasn’t been written back in yet. Young William Ransome, Jamies son, comes back to New England to participate in his first campaigns of The War of Independence. Of course John Grey comes back to try to find him. Now, if we get seasons 7 and 8, we should be getting into the meat of The American War of Independence. And yes, it’s longer and bigger that that wee battle of Alamance. So this could drag out for two more seasons. In which case Lord John Grey will turn back up.

Oh, and this changes up another storyline of Ulysses and Jocasta in the books. For now, they are parted. Book readers know the one.

William

So, now that Jamie has lost Murtagh, he will be dealing with Richard Brown wanting revenge, and a desire to see his son. After he delivered the body of his brother at the end of season 5, he was told that Richard will do what he needs to do. That said, Jamie has an enemy in the guise of a man who will use the law to get revenge on Fraser’s Ridge. In the background of this, Jamie has told Brianna that she has a brother. Some foreshadowing of young William coming back, and the delicate dance of making sure he never finds out that Jamie is his father.

There are so many questions. What are some of yours?
