Outlander’s Most Important Season 5 Casting: ADSO!

IMG_2931

It was with great delight and letting out of held breath that Adso the cat’s character was 1. Included in Season 5, since Clarence the Mule has really been down played and they stuck with amazingly beautiful horse for Claire to ride. 2. And cast very grey indeed. 3. And quite ferocious. Looks like they have chosen a British Short Hair in the blue variety. We are still seeking out the name of the acting rep so we may find the actor’s name.

Adso is the somewhat wee cheetie found on the road back from the Gathering at Mount Halcion. Jamie finds the cat and gifts him to “Sasanach” to keep her surgery clear of mice. The cat lives in cupboards when not disappearing. Jamie suggests the name of Adso, as that was the name of his mother’s cat. Claire becomes a bit attached to the cat. Hopefully some of the cats antics will get played up, as so far not much of Clarence the Mule has been used. The next casting for animal actors if keeping with the books should be the White Sow, if they do not keep the animal actor from season 4 for a return performance. Fans will remember the sow taking residence in the house and having enormous litters.

Welcome Adso! I’m rereading The Fiery Cross for third time to kill Droughtlander time, I think I just want to skip ahead now.

The “C”ator is seen here going into ferocious emote. Sam is being very careful and also allowing fellow actor to fulfill his BTS chat. Would you look at that, the fur is already clinging to Sam’s tricorn.Screen Shot 2019-05-26 at 11.41.43 AM

Outlander Season 5 Characters: Dr. George Sims and the Regulator Cause

download-2.jpgAs we all try to survive another season of Droughtlander, it’s time to occupy ourselves with a little American Colonial history that not many outside of North Carolina know: The War of the Regulation. It will be a key factor in action in the upcoming season. For a great background on the upcoming season start reading up on your North Carolina history.

In the book, “The Fiery Cross”,  by Diana Gabaldon, Jamie Fraser is asked to muster a militia and help Gov. Tryon put down a rebellious group calling themselves The Regulators. Claire hears details from a patient, Mr. Goodwin, about his friend Mr. Fanning, and a riot that broke out in Hillsborough. The Regulators created a riot so fierce that Fanning’s home was destroyed, and Goodwin was injured in coming to his aid.

In Outlander Season 4, we are reintroduced to fan favorite Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, who has suffered under indentured servitude for 12 years. Upon being released he and many others that were brought to the colonies had to make it on their own in the New World. Many could not afford a ship fare to return to their homeland, or feared doing so. While Murtagh suffered servitude, he was lucky and was able to set himself up as a smithy. However he, and many like him, would be subjected to unfair treatment in the form of over taxation in fees. It’s not a new concept with the British Empire, and all colonies fell under British Empire’s exploitation of people and of rich resources from the lands, heavily taxing the colonists for returned finished goods such as cloth and tea. However, it wasn’t just goods that were taxed, it was legal representation.

In the series Outlander’s 4th season, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) is one of leaders of the group calling themselves The Regulation, or Regulators. There were members in several regional areas, and loosely formed groups with acting leaders. This movement was composed of farmers and anyone else trying to do business living in the burgeoning times, many of whom had lost their property or livelihood due to excessive fees. The chief complaint was over fees for legal representation and taxation. There was no equal representation with due process in the local regions unless they had money for the excessive fees. Colonists wanted a standardization of any fees, and to see them published, not changed on a whim.

The Stamp Act was created to tax duty on newspapers, legal documents, and commercial documents. In 1766 it was repealed and encouraged colonists to take up against other injustices in the colonies.

Standing Up to Political Corruption

There were several factors that played into the forming of the cause and subsequent rising. Population growth pushed at occupants currently in place in 1760-65 North Carolina and crop failure made it impossible to pay any form of taxes on land for the poorer landowners inland for paying off loans with creditors against crops. The rich plantation owners had access to the rivers and larger crops to sell, access to water, slaves for labor, and transport. Then there was corruption of local sheriffs who squeezed colonists for money. Local courts had control over the regions, with officials often corruptible themselves. The colonists considered these regional boroughs to all be corrupt. The colony of North Carolina found itself essentially dealing with a class war.

One early protest, “The Nutbush Address”, was given by George Sims, a school master in 1765. It was given in Nutbush, later Williamsboro, North Carolina. He was persuaded to publish the speech. The speech denounced abuse of power by local officials and the excessive fees they charged. It protested malpractice of laws in the region. He addressed the deeds of a local clerk, a Mr. Benton, and later was jailed and sued by Benton.

The points:

  • Farmer would be taken to court by a creditor
  • Court fees were twice as much as the debt
  • Farmer must obtain lawyer (fees) file in Court (fees) pay a sheriff’s fee
  • Fees were not standardized

Three years later, the Regulators would use the arguments in this address to further heir cause, outlining their rebellion.

Outlander Touring is in Full Swing

downloadMany of you lucky fans are hopping the Atlantic and exploring Scotland to follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire. There are a great many locations for seasons 1-4 and if you went solidly to just see all locations, it would take more than three weeks of travel. You may have to make some choices and come back again. That wouldn’t be so terrible.

Having gone to Scotland twice since the filming began, and relying on public transport for most of my stay, I found it very limiting in some cases when on public transit to try to get every day filled with locations. There are Outlander Tours a plenty if you have it in your budget, and knowing which ones are good can be difficult, as all of the commercial touring companies have set up tours. Not all tour companies have quality tours, for any of their tours. Check out trip reviews before you use one. Large tour buses to sites are highly annoying, difficult to get around to sites, and you will be limited to where  these monsters can go. Keep in mind that some tours may cancel or skip some locations due to time constraints. If you want a smaller intimate tour, which I do recommend van tours, check out my Tours Page. I am collecting information and feedback from people who have taken tours, and so far the ones listed have had favorable reviews.

Check out Traveling Savage’s Scotland article:

Traveling Savage Hire Cars Know Before You Go

Obtaining a hire car with several travel friends can be managed,  however familiarize yourself with the driving laws, and the driver cannot have access to a phone for navigation. There are heavy fines for phone use while driving. Many companies will take a huge deposit and not return it if there is even the smallest of scratches on the car. Check out hire car reviews!

I have created a resource after my last visit. This and a good map should help you to plan. It is a Google Docs Document:

Outlander Season 5 Bridge of Allan Night Shoot May 6, 2019

@Stewart9395 Duncan Lacroix arrives

Great catches by both @Stewart9395 and Outlandish Journeys, one of the tour groups listed on our Outlander Tours page, of some BTS pictures and video on the late afternoon setup and evening shoot for the show’s season 5 first block of shooting in Bridge of Allen, just north of Stirling. The filming took place in the quarry by the golf course, in Mine Woods.

Filming was with Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser) and the Regulators extras.

I want to thank both Stewart and Outlandish Journeys for taking the time and patience to wait and film, and as always, not film the filming process. If you are lucky and stumble upon filming in your travels, we appreciate it if you do the same. Let’s give everyone the creative space they need.

Night shoot spotted on May 6, 2019 by @stewart9395 at Mine Woods, Bridge of Allan, a small town near Stirling, Scotland. None other than Duncan Lacroix was spotted going in and reconnoitering the area, and what looks to be the Regulators forming up. Production area is a camp scene and small crossroads or trading area in the wooded area around the quarry. The Movie Makers equipment trailers and lorries are up and in position.

Check out the Bridge of Allan Facebook page @bridgeofallan for all the up to dates as locals snap shots.

If you are fortunate to be in Scotland for the next few days, May 6-8, you may catch some of the filming. Maybe even give a Regulator a hug. They will need it.
